The Gombe State Government has warned residents against violating the monthly environmental sanitation regulations, as the Commissioner for Environment and Forestry, Yusuf L. Jalingo, called for improved public compliance with the three-hour exercise.
The Commissioner issued the warning while monitoring the October sanitation exercise conducted across the state today.
Jalingo described the level of compliance as appreciable, commending residents who cleaned their surroundings, while those found violating the regulations were directed to sweep their environments immediately.
He said several shops were also locked for failing to comply with the exercise.
The Commissioner, however, expressed concern over the movement of people during the sanitation period, urging residents to remain indoors and allow the exercise to achieve its intended purpose.
Jalingo disclosed that the monitoring committee had identified routes where commercial motorcycles and tricycles diverted to operate during the exercise, warning that the ministry would take appropriate measures to prevent further violations.
He added that the mobile court remained available to prosecute motorists and other offenders arrested at designated checkpoints.
The Commissioner also commended security agencies for their support, assuring that additional personnel would be deployed to areas with inadequate police presence to ensure full compliance.
Our correspondent, in Gombe Aliyu Bala Gerengi who monitored the exercise alongside the sanitation committee, reports that major markets, including Gombe Main Market and Dankombo Mega Park, were closed in compliance with the exercise.
However, some heavy-duty trucks were observed at Liji and New Mile Three.
