The National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) is strengthening efforts to promote democratic governance, legislative excellence and youth development through strategic engagement with the European Union (EU).
The initiative, under the leadership of the Director-General of NILDS, Prof. Abubakar Olanrewaju Suleiman, also known as Prof. Amana, focuses on strengthening democratic institutions, promoting constructive dialogue and equipping young Nigerians with the knowledge and skills needed to participate meaningfully in the country’s democratic process.
A notable component of the partnership is the NILDS–EU Inter-Secondary School Debate Programme, which provides students with opportunities to develop public speaking, critical thinking, research and argumentation skills while engaging with issues of democratic governance and national development.
Discussions are also ongoing on expanding the programme nationwide to enable more students to benefit from the initiative and encourage a culture of informed debate and responsible citizenship among young Nigerians.
The collaboration underscores the importance of investing in education and youth engagement as essential pillars of democratic consolidation and institutional development.
Through initiatives of this nature, NILDS seeks to strengthen public understanding of legislative processes, encourage young people to engage constructively with democratic institutions and nurture a generation of informed citizens capable of contributing to Nigeria’s democratic future.
The European Union, represented by its Head of Delegation to Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Ambassador Gautier Mignot, remains a key international partner in initiatives aimed at supporting democratic development and institutional capacity-building.
The partnership reflects a shared interest in promoting stronger institutions, improving democratic participation and creating opportunities for young people to contribute to governance and public policy discussions.
For Nigeria, expanding educational initiatives such as the inter-secondary school debate programme could provide a valuable platform for developing future leaders, encouraging evidence-based discussions and strengthening the relationship between citizens and democratic institutions.
As the country continues to navigate its democratic development, sustained collaboration between national institutions and international partners remains important in advancing legislative capacity, civic education and youth participation.
The NILDS–EU engagement therefore highlights the potential of strategic partnerships to promote legislative excellence, democratic governance, education and youth development.
By strengthening institutions and empowering young citizens, NILDS and the European Union are working towards a more informed, inclusive and resilient democratic future for Nigeria.
