…Approval Takes Effect October 2026, Pending NUC Accreditation
The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) has granted approval to the proposed Department of Nursing Sciences at AbdulRasaq Abubakar Toyin University, Oke-Ogba, Kwara State, to commence training with an admission quota of 100 students.
The approval, which takes effect from October 2026, was conveyed in an official letter dated October 29, 2026, addressed to the Vice-Chancellor of the university.
The letter, signed by the Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of the Council, Ndagi Alhassan, RN, PhD, FWAPCNM, followed an advisory visit conducted by an NMCN team to the proposed Department of Nursing Sciences.
According to the Council, the university has been granted approval to commence training with an admission quota of one hundred students, marking a significant milestone in its efforts to expand healthcare education and professional nursing training in Kwara State.
However, the Council advised the university management to expedite action towards securing accreditation approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) and formally communicate with the NMCN to facilitate the subsequent accreditation process.
The Council also emphasised the need for sustained compliance with its prescribed standards and requirements for nursing education and training.
It further disclosed that a detailed report of the advisory visit, including observations and recommendations, would be communicated to the university in due course.
The approval is expected to strengthen access to professional nursing education in the state and provide opportunities for prospective students seeking careers in nursing sciences.
The development also underscores the growing importance of partnerships between regulatory institutions and universities in expanding the capacity of Nigeria’s healthcare workforce.
The NMCN congratulated the university management on the approval and expressed its continued commitment to supporting the development of nursing education and professional practice in the country.
