There was pandemonium in Borno State’s Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs’ Camps over the industrial face-off between the Management and staff of National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA as the state joined their counterparts in Abuja and other states of the federation to embark on an indefinite strike, alleging ill-treatment and non-payment of allowances under the leadership of the new Director General, Mustapha Yunusa Maihaja.
This development has put fears on the minds of thousands of internally-displaced persons, IDPs, taking refuge at various resettlement camps being collectively managed by the state government, humanitarian partners and NEMA.
Time Nigeria learnt that NEMA staff decided to join the strike due to what he described as “lackadaisical attitude of the Director General over non-payment of allowances, withholding welfare agreement signed between workers, management and the agency.” The source said the workers had ordered their colleagues to shutdown services across the state, including those working in IDP camps.
Some IDPs at Bakassi, Dalori I & II camps in Maiduguri metropolis, expressed shock over the strike. They argued that the agency workers were not supposed to down tools for even a minute, considering their immense contribution in catering for their plights, as they are in dire need of food, healthcare, clothing and shelter.
The IDPs appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari and all other arms of government to investigate the circumstances that led to the strike, with a view to punishing culprits
