Prominent Nigerian political scholar and elder statesman, Professor Rufa’i Ahmed Alkali, has strongly condemned a recent report by the United States Embassy in Nigeria, describing it as “an act of hypocrisy and unwarranted interference” in the internal affairs of the country.
In a statement made available to newsmen, Professor Alkali expressed deep concern over what he termed a “blatant act of diplomatic indiscretion,” stating that Nigeria, like other developing countries, needs constructive engagement—not what he called unsolicited and condescending criticism.
The report, which raised concerns about governance and accountability in certain Nigerian states, was described by Professor Alkali as part of a broader U.S. agenda aimed at discrediting and embarrassing Nigeria on the global stage.
He further accused the United States of applying double standards, citing America’s continued support for Israel despite well-documented atrocities in Palestine, with little or no corresponding sanctions or accountability measures.
Professor Alkali emphasized that Nigeria’s democracy may not be perfect but remains a sovereign project for Nigerians to develop and defend.
He called on African leaders and the Nigerian public to stand united against all forms of foreign interference and to uphold the sovereignty and dignity of the continent.
