In a major push to industrialize Nigeria’s cassava value chain, FMN Agro, through its Premium Cassava Products Division (PCPD), has partnered with the Federal Government to mark the 2025 World Cassava Day. The high-level event, held at the Banquet Hall of the State House in Abuja, spotlighted Nigeria’s global leadership in cassava production and emphasized the need for increased innovation, investment, and export-driven strategies.
Convened by the Office of the Senior Assistant to the President on Agribusiness and Productivity Enhancement, this year’s celebration carried the theme: “Farm to Global Markets: Driving Industrialization, Food Security and Exports.” It brought together key stakeholders across public and private sectors to advance the discourse on cassava industrialization, youth innovation, import substitution, and export competitiveness.
FMN Agro, a subsidiary of the diversified food and agro-allied giant Flour Mills of Nigeria (FMN), played a strategic role in the event. The company’s delegation actively contributed to critical policy and investment conversations aimed at repositioning cassava as a transformative economic crop.
Speaking during a panel session titled “Strengthening Linkages from Farms to Global Markets,” Mr. Akhanemeh Joseph Osikhena, General Manager of PCPD, emphasized FMN Agro’s strategic efforts to transition cassava from a subsistence crop to a commercial and industrial raw material.
“Our work through PCPD and Golden Agri Inputs Limited (GAIL) is focused on transforming Nigeria’s cassava narrative. We’re investing in localized capacity-building to reduce import dependency while creating jobs and increasing export revenues,” Osikhena stated.
Echoing this, Mr. Sadiq Usman, Managing Director of FMN Agro and Group Director, Partnerships and Strategic Engagements, noted the importance of collaborative efforts like World Cassava Day to unlock the full potential of Nigeria’s agricultural assets.
“We commend the Federal Government for this impactful initiative. Through platforms like this, we can drive the right conversations around scale, investment readiness, and export competitiveness — and back them with real commitments,” said Usman. “Our purpose remains Feeding and Enriching Lives, Every Day, and we will continue to forge valuable partnerships to achieve this.”
A major highlight of the event was the Cassava Changemakers Pitch Competition, which showcased breakthrough innovations across the cassava value chain, reinforcing the event’s focus on youth-driven agribusiness solutions.
FMN Agro’s investment in cassava spans backward integration, support for smallholder farmers, starch production, and access to markets, solidifying its leadership in agribusiness development.
