FRSC bans use of swap number plates

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has banned the use of swap number plates in Nigeria.

FRSC Assistant Corps Marshal, Bisi Kazeem in a statement on Tuesday said that the use of rotational number plates is considered a criminal act as it is illegal.

Kazeem stated that the ban came up after the commission was drawn to a video circulating on social media which displayed a vehicle with double number plates.

 

“The vehicle number plates on display are: KUJ-304BV, while the other side which was automatically flipped carries a number tagged presidency with the following details, 01B-266FG,” Kazeem said

He disclosed that a full investigation has been ordered by the acting corps marshal, Dauda Ali Biu, as the commission does not produce a number plate with double features.

“Only one number can be assigned to one vehicle and its owner at the same time. FRSC is using this medium to warn Nigerians from replicating same as it is considered a criminal act which has its place in law.”

Kazeem added that users of vehicles with unauthorised number plates are not duly registered and are often with sinister motives.

Spokesman for Nigeria Police Muyiwa Adejobi condemned the video of swapped number plates and described it as “very criminal”.

Adejobi urged Nigerians to reject the technology and use of fake numbers, saying it is punishable under the law.

He added that the police force will collaborate with relevant agencies to curb the illegal use of fake, unregistered plate numbers and the coverage of number plates with a leather cover.
