Gombe State University (GSU) had the distinct honor of hosting the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Dr. Amina J. Muhammed (GCON).
In a Press Release signed by Hadu Naphtali Ligari, Public Relations Officer Gombe State University, indicated that high-profile engagement featured insightful discussions with the University’s leadership on institutional growth, academic excellence, and gender inclusivity.
The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sani Ahmed Yauta, warmly received Dr. Amina J. Mohammed (GCON), who was accompanied by key University officials, including the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Umar; the Registrar, Dr. Abubakar Bafeto; and the Director of Physical Planning, Malam Murtala Salisu.
During the meeting, the Vice-Chancellor provided an overview of the University’s impressive strides over the past two decades, highlighting infrastructural advancements, academic achievements, and strategic initiatives aimed at positioning GSU as a leading institution in Nigeria and beyond.
A major highlight of the visit was the announcement of the naming of the University’s Institute for Gender Studies, the first of its kind in Northeast Nigeria in honor of Dr. Amina J. Muhammed’s unwavering commitment to women’s empowerment and global sustainable development. The institute will bear her name and serve as a hub for research and advocacy on gender equality.
In her remarks, Dr. Amina J. Mohammed (GCON) commended GSU for its remarkable progress and dedication to gender equality. She emphasized the need for a holistic approach to development within academic institutions, stating, “While we focus on the students, we sometimes forget the staff.” She acknowledged the crucial role of personnel in shaping future leaders.
She pledged strategic collaborations to benefit both students and staff, including capacity-building programs and potential support to enhance the University’s global standing.
On the recommendation of the Ag. Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Amina J. Muhammed (GCON) visited a lecture hall where examinations were in progress. She briefly interacted with students and was particularly pleased to observe the near-equal representation of male and female students, reinforcing the University’s dedication to providing equal opportunities for all.
The visit serves as a catalyst for transformative growth, reinforcing GSU’s commitment to enhancing collaborations both nationally and globally.
