The Wife of the Gombe Local Government Chairman, Aishatu Sani Ahmadu Haruna, took an oath of commitment and received the draft Gender Based Violence (GBV) Prohibition Law from the wife of the Gombe State Governor during an advocacy visit.
The event featured a welcome address by the Gombe LGA Secretary, Aliyu Muhammad Dawaki, who commended the Governor’s wife for touring all eleven LGAs to intensify the fight against gender-based violence in the state.
Represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Asma’u Mohammed Iganus, the Governor’s wife praised the women of Gombe State for their dedication to the campaign and encouraged LGAs to fully implement the provisions of the GBV law.
Lawmakers, Traditional Leaders Back Enforcement of GBV Law
The Chairman of the House Committee on Women Affairs, Gabriel Galadima, and the Majority Leader, Yerima Ladan Gaule, both emphasized the urgent need to enforce the law to ensure offenders face strict punishment.
During a visit to his palace, the Emir of Dukku, Alhaji Haruna Abdulkadir Rashid II, declared that there would be no sacred cow for anyone found guilty of gender-based violence within his Emirate.
He reiterated that strong penalties are necessary to safeguard the dignity of women and children.
Commissioner Asma’u Mohammed Iganus further emphasized that traditional rulers remain crucial custodians of justice and must support the implementation of the GBV law at community level.
She also applauded the government’s establishment of GBV response structures since 2022, calling on traditional institutions to work closely with newly inaugurated committees to ensure justice and deterrence.
