The HANs Centre for Social Justice and Development, in collaboration with Kanady Academy, has successfully concluded a three-day intensive career and skills development programme aimed at empowering vulnerable children and women across Gombe State.

Speaking during the event, Founder of the HANs Centre, Barrister Hannatu Dauda Simon, said the initiative was created to equip young people with the academic and practical knowledge needed to prepare them for leadership roles and economic independence.

“Today we are hosting a Career Day in partnership with Kanady Academy. Our NGO is deeply committed to the welfare and rights of vulnerable children. We want to see them grow into responsible and successful leaders of tomorrow,” she stated.

Barrister Simon emphasized that in the current economic climate, classroom learning alone is no longer enough.

She highlighted the importance of hands-on vocational skills that can help young people secure sustainable sources of income.

“We want these children to be fully prepared not only academically but also with entrepreneurial skills. Our aim is to help them start sustainable businesses and become self-reliant despite the economic challenges we face,” she said.

According to her, the programme brought together more than 100 young women and children from across Gombe State, including students of Kanady Academy, which hosted the training.

Over the three days, participants took part in intensive sessions facilitated by professionals from various sectors.

They were trained in shoemaking, bakery, interior design, yoghurt production, perfume and incense making, kilishi roasting, boutique management, and multistream marketing.

“We invited experts in each field to train them thoroughly. The enthusiasm shown by the participants has been remarkable. Walking into their classes, you see them practicing exactly what they have been taught,” she added.

Barrister Simon noted that participants would make presentations at the end of the programme to demonstrate the skills they acquired and how the training has inspired their future goals.

“Even if they finish school without immediately securing well-paying jobs, they will still have skills to depend on. And for those who eventually get formal employment, these skills will serve as an additional source of income,” she explained.

She appreciated Kanady Academy for hosting the programme and reaffirmed the HANs Centre’s commitment to supporting vulnerable children and young women to build meaningful, productive futures.

Some beneficiaries who spoke during the workshop expressed joy and gratitude for the opportunity provided through the HANs Centre’s sponsorship.

They said the training would help shape their future careers and provide practical knowledge to support their education.

They also commended HANs Centre and Kanady Academy for their dedication to improving the lives of young people in Gombe State and promised to make good use of the start-up packs and capital provided to them.
