HoReps Speaker Reaffirms Commitment to Ethical Conduct to Safeguard Institutional Intergrity

 

The House of Representatives is evolving new ethical framework towards emplacing robust enforcement mechanism. for the Institution. This is contained in a statement signed by Mohammad Abdulkadri Media Adviser TO DG NILDS and made available to TimeNigeria.

Accirding to the statement,  “The Speaker House of Representatives Rt. Hon Abbas Tajudeen represented by Rep. Solomon Bob gave the indication in his speech to declare open a One-day Capacity Building Conference for Committee on Ethics and Priveleges of the National Assembly, hosted by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, NILDS.

“While appreciating the unquantifiable role of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, NILDS, under the watch of its intellectually mobile Director General , Professor Abubakar Olanrewaju Sulaiman he urged the institute to sustain the tempo.”

It added further that, “The Speaker of the 10th National Assembly therefore enjoined NILDS to continue to deepen symbiotic working relationship with the House of Representatives in providing technical assistance and expertise in upholding ethical standards.

“The Chairman House Committee on Ethics and Priveleges, Honourable Tolulope Akande- Sadipe said no nation can progress without Ethics and good governance.

“Honourable Akande- Sadipe gave the Speaker Rt. Hon Abbas Tajudeen and NILDS Director General, Professor Abubakar Olanrewaju Sulaiman huge compliments for putting the conference together at this auspicious time.

“The representative of the Minister of Information and National Orientation who is the Director General National Orientation Agency, NOA Mallam Lanre Issa Onilu sought to speak from communication principles and perspective.

“He said it’s unethical to abandon communication to personal Aids.
While noting that communication mantrax has changed ethnically, he emphasised the need for factuality, honesty and reality in information dissemination to the public.
He said under Renewed Hope Agenda The National Value Charter will be launched soon to sensitise Nigerians to their responsibilities as citizens.”

The Convener of the Conference which has as its “Theme: Overview of Legislative Ethics and Legislative for Optimal Performance, Issues, Challenges and way Forward for Legislature” Professor Abubakar Olanrewaju Sulaiman tasked participants to profer solutions to problems rather than just diagnose the challenges.

According to the Professor Sulaiman said the effectiveness of Legislature hinges on Ethics and Priveleges and called for actionable insights and renewed commitment to ethical standards and conduct.
The NILDS Director General who thanked the Chairman of the Governing Council of the Institute, the Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabio CON, and the alternate Chairman, Rt.Hon Abbas Tajudeen, PhD for their support for the conference said the high turn out for the event is a testimony to their support for ethical standards.

The opening ceremony dovetailed into technical sessions, panel discussion and presentation of certificates to the Parliamentarians.

Stakeholders in Ethics and Priveleges sector attended the conference including the Federal Commissioner , Code of Conduct Bureau Barrister Murtala Konbio, his Counterpart from ICPC and the Chief Protocol Ministry of Foreign affairs, Ambassador Benaoyagba Okoyen.
