NAFDAC Warns Kogi Residents Against Toxic Local Gins, Plans Statewide Sensitisation Campaign

Consumers of locally produced dry gin have been told to be careful with their choices of consumption due to reported cases of products lazed with dangerous chemicals that poses health risk to the people..

Kogi State Coordinator of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration ( NAFDAC), Mr Anikoh Ibrahim gave the warning in an interview with newsmen in Lokoja.

Mr Anikoh said there was an established cases of alcoholic bitters lazed with dangerous chemicals to make it more potent at the detriment of the wellness of the people.

He said there will soon be a sensitisation tour across the three Senatorial Districts of the state to educate the public to be careful with choices they make due to possibility of consuming fake alcoholic drinks.

The State Coordinator emphasized that the Agency will partner with the state government and sisters’ agencies including; Standard Organisation of Nigeria, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), media and other stakeholders in the advocacy.

On possible differentiation of genuine products, Mr Anikoh said all genuine products must display labels that indicates name of products, manufacturing date, address, weight, batch coding, composition, expiry date among others.

He urged the public to always report cases of fake products to the agency for prompt action assuring that the Agency will leave no stone unturned to get rid of fake products from the market space.
