Remo Federal Constituency Election: PDP Lost Hope in Themselves, Endorses APC Ahead of August 16 Election

2 Mins read

In a surprising and politically charged twist, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) all but admitted its collapse in the Remo Federal Constituency, openly endorsing the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at their own campaign flag-off event.

The event, intended to rally support for the PDP’s candidate ahead of the upcoming by-election, instead turned into a public confession of the party’s dwindling influence and inability to chart a winning course. Senior PDP stakeholders, including the PDP governorship candidate in the 2023 governorship election, Hon. Ladi Adebutu, local ward leaders and former office holders, took turns praising Tinubu’s leadership and the APC’s growing popularity across the South-West, calling on their supporters to “embrace reality” and align with the nation’s ruling party.

With the Remo Federal Constituency by-election fast approaching, the PDP’s open endorsement of Tinubu may well signal the final nail in the coffin for the party’s prospects in the region and perhaps beyond.

The APC, on the other hand, continues to consolidate its influence, with President Tinubu’s reformist agenda gaining traction in the South-West. The ruling party has steadily expanded its support base, while the PDP grapples with internal divisions, defections, and an identity crisis.

“The truth is, we cannot deceive ourselves any longer,” said one prominent PDP chieftain who craved anonymity during the flag-off. “APC has the structure, the leadership, and the vision Nigeria needs. President Bola Tinubu has shown what decisive leadership looks like. The PDP has become a shadow of what it used to be — an empty shell struggling to stay relevant.”

Attendees at the event were left stunned as what was billed as a show of strength for the PDP turned into a soft launch for cross-party alignment. Some members of the PDP campaign team were seen wearing APC-coloured caps, further symbolizing the deep cracks and confusion within the party’s local ranks.

Observers say the endorsement is the clearest sign yet that the PDP has lost both direction and confidence in its own machinery. While APC candidates continue to gain momentum across Ogun State, PDP insiders admit privately that they lack the grassroots appeal, unity, and strategic coordination necessary to challenge the ruling party’s dominance.

Political analyst Gbenga Adekoya noted: “This is unprecedented. For a major opposition party to publicly throw its weight behind the rival president at its own event speaks volumes. It’s not just about the Remo constituency anymore — this is symbolic of the PDP’s wider crisis.”
