Revitalizing Golf: FCT Sports Department Appoints Caretaker Committee

In a bold move to breathe new life into golf within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Sports Department has unveiled a caretaker committee tasked with steering the FCT Golf Association toward greater achievements. The committee, led by the newly appointed chairman, Mr. Akabom Enebong, will oversee the association’s activities for one year, following the approval of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

The appointment, confirmed through a letter signed by Luka Istifanus, FCT’s Director of Sports, signals the government’s commitment to reinvigorating the sport. “The management of the FCT Sports Department, Social Development Secretariat of FCTA, has found you worthy to serve for a term of one year,” the letter read.

This development follows the October 2023 dissolution of all FCT sports association boards, marking the end of their four-year tenures. The new caretaker committee has been charged with not only maintaining but elevating the profile of golf across the territory.

Speaking on the vision of the committee, Chairman Akabom Enebong expressed his resolve to make golf more accessible and competitive. “Our goal is to promote the game, starting from the grassroots through primary and secondary schools. We also want to ensure the FCT team is well-prepared and motivated to excel in national sports events,” he said.

Enebong emphasized the importance of collaboration in achieving these objectives. “We aim to make the association effective and impactful by partnering with organizations that share our vision. Additionally, we hope to popularize positive role models in sports to inspire our youth and nurture them into responsible citizens,” he added.

The committee also includes other seasoned members such as Mal Suleiman Yusuf, who will serve as secretary, alongside Mr. Ashir Tarfa, Mrs. Ngozi Bose Onwuegbu, Mr. Julius Fadairo, Dr. Dickson Ifiok, Mr. Sheu Ayoola Momodu, and Mr. Olanrewaju Adeniran.

This renewed focus on golf reflects a broader push by the FCT administration to elevate sports as a tool for development, engagement, and excellence. With the vision and expertise of the new caretaker committee, golf enthusiasts in the FCT have much to look forward to.
