The much-anticipated sighting of the new moon of Shawwal 1446AH has been confirmed, marking the conclusion of Ramadan and paving the way for the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr across Nigeria, tomorrow, Sunday, 30th of March, 2025.
The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has make an official announcement shortly, detailing the moon sighting and confirming tomorrow, 30th of March, 2025 the day for Eid prayers.
The sighting of the crescent moon signifies the end of the holy month of Ramadan, a period of intense worship, fasting, and self-discipline observed by millions of Muslims worldwide. The Sultan, as the spiritual leader of Nigerian Muslims, plays a crucial role in verifying and declaring the start of Islamic months, in accordance with Islamic tradition.
According to Islamic teachings, the month of Ramadan lasts either 29 or 30 days, depending on the visibility of the moon. Once the crescent of Shawwal is sighted, it confirms the arrival of Eid-ul-Fitr, a festival of thanksgiving, communal prayers, and charitable giving.
Reports from various moon sighting committees and Islamic scholars across different states indicate that the crescent was sighted in multiple locations, thereby confirming the end of Ramadan. Following standard practice, the NSCIA and the Sultanate Council have reviewed these reports to ensure their authenticity before making an official pronouncement.
Muslims across Nigeria have been eagerly awaiting the announcement, as it determines the exact day for Eid celebrations. The declaration will also guide the arrangements for Eid prayers, which are traditionally held in large congregations at Eid grounds and mosques nationwide.
Beyond the celebration, Eid-ul-Fitr is also a time for reflection, gratitude, and generosity. Islamic scholars have reminded the faithful to complete their obligatory Zakat al-Fitr (charitable donation) before the commencement of Eid prayers, ensuring that the less privileged also partake in the joyous occasion.
In his expected announcement, the Sultan is also likely to call on Nigerians to uphold the virtues of Ramadan, including patience, piety, and acts of kindness, while praying for peace and prosperity in the country.
As Muslims prepare to celebrate, authorities have advised the public to observe necessary safety precautions during travel and gatherings, ensuring a peaceful and orderly festivity.
