“To the remaining students, please face your studies squarely, know the sons and daughters of whom you are. Always ensure you are in good standing”  –  Akogun

The Director of Corporate Affairs, University of Ilorin, Mr Kunle Akogun, has admonished sons and daughters of Igbominaland to uphold the admonitions contained in the letters and spirit of the Igbomina Anthem at all times  in whatever they do and wherever they are.

Mr Akogun gave the advice last weekend while speaking at the 2024 Igbomina Day celebration, organised by the Igbomina National Students Union (INSU), University of Ilorin Chapter.

The Director, who is also the Grand Patron of the Union, disclosed that “Igbomina are known for our hard work, selflessness, integrity, probity, incorruptibility, and community service”, adding that “all these attributes are contained in the Anthem”.

While urging the students to keep the flag of Igbomina flying anywhere they find themselves, the thorough-bred journalist added that they should be shining examples of children with good upbringing in whatever they do, especially as students of the University of Ilorin, an institution well known for its zero tolerance for anti-social behaviours.

Mr Akogun further advised the students to ensure that they are always on the right side of the rules and regulations of UNILORIN in order not to abridge their academic sojourn.

He congratulated those among them who have just completed their final year examinations, wishing them God’s blessings in their future endeavour.

“To the remaining students, please face your studies squarely, know the sons and daughters of whom you are. Always ensure you are in good standing”, he urged.

Also in his remarks, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Performing Arts, University of Ilorin, Dr Simeon Tayo Arinde, urged the students not to disappoint the Igbomina ancestors, by not involving in negative acts on the campus and outside.

He urged them to follow the footsteps of those before them and make positive marks in the annals of the University.

Also speaking, the chairman of the occasion, who is also the Chairman of Akeem Ayinla Foundation (AAF), Comrade Akeem Ayinla Ishola, said that the Igbomina Day celebration, also tagged “EKURU DAY”, is a day to celebrate “our rich cultural heritage, a legacy that has shaped our identity and defined our community for generations”.

Comrade Ayinla, who is a former National President of INSU, said, “As we navigate the complexities of the 21st century, it is imperative that we sustain and preserve our cultural heritage, ensuring its relevance and impact for future generations”, adding that “our lgbomina culture is a treasure trove of wisdom, resilience, and creativity. From the ancient artefacts to the vibrant traditional festivals, our heritage is a testament to our ancestors’ ingenuity and our community’s strength”.

Earlier in his speech, the immediate past President of the Union, Akande Mubaraq Adeola, appreciated Allah for His mercy and all those that have assisted the association. He urged all members to “continue to work together in unity and love, to uphold the value and principles that this Union stands for”.

Highlights of the event include presentation of awards to personalities who have made the Igbomina land proud and inauguration of new executives of the Union.
