The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has issued a scathing rebuke of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of dragging Nigeria into global irrelevance due to its failure to appoint ambassadors to foreign missions more than two years after recalling all envoys.
In a strongly worded statement by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC labeled the diplomatic void as “a ticking time bomb” that has left Nigeria exposed, underrepresented, and increasingly sidelined on the world stage.
“Since 2023, when President Tinubu recalled all 109 ambassadors, not a single replacement has been announced. This is not just an oversight—it’s a national disgrace,” the statement read.
The ADC warned that the prolonged diplomatic paralysis is damaging Nigeria’s bilateral relations with key global powers such as the United States and the United Arab Emirates. It further noted that consular services have deteriorated worldwide, with lower-level diplomats now struggling to perform tasks meant for full-fledged ambassadors.
“Without properly accredited ambassadors, Nigeria is practically invisible in crucial diplomatic, economic, and security discussions. Other nations are sealing deals, while we remain voiceless and absent,” Abdullahi said.
The party emphasized that the diplomatic silence is already costing Nigeria in visa approvals, trade negotiations, and international cooperation, describing the situation as a deliberate failure by the APC government to manage foreign policy with seriousness.
“Nigeria’s image is being battered daily. Our embassies are ghost offices, and our presence in global affairs is now merely symbolic. This is not leadership—it’s sabotage,” the ADC declared.
The party also lashed out at the Tinubu administration’s mishandling of a recent diplomatic controversy involving the United States, which reportedly pressured Nigeria to accept deported Venezuelans. While the ADC supported the government’s stance, it condemned the Foreign Affairs Minister’s public handling of the matter on live television as “reckless and undiplomatic.”
“Sensitive diplomatic issues should never be discussed live on air. The Minister’s comments were not only careless—they may have jeopardized relations with one of our strongest allies,” the statement noted.
The ADC demanded immediate action from President Tinubu, calling the continued delay “a threat to Nigeria’s sovereignty and international dignity.”
“If this administration continues to neglect its diplomatic responsibilities, we risk being diplomatically downgraded or even blacklisted by our partners. The consequences could be catastrophic,” the party warned.
