2 Mins read

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, MON, as Deputy Director, Security and Intelligence 1 of the 2027 All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council.

The appointment is part of the constitution of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, which brings together senior political leaders, strategists and grassroots mobilisers to coordinate the party’s activities ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

In his new role, Matawalle is expected to play a central part in developing and coordinating the security architecture for campaign activities across the country. His responsibilities will include supporting the safety of presidential campaign candidates, officials and supporters during campaign engagements.

He is also expected to contribute to intelligence gathering, risk assessment and threat mitigation by working with relevant security agencies to identify and address potential security challenges that could affect campaign activities.

The former Zamfara State Governor will further be involved in inter-agency and stakeholder coordination, including engagements with traditional rulers, community leaders, youth and women groups, as part of efforts to strengthen security arrangements and promote peaceful political participation.

Matawalle’s appointment is seen as a recognition of his experience in governance, security management and political mobilisation, particularly his background in managing complex security challenges during his tenure as Governor of Zamfara State.

As Minister of State for Defence, he has also been involved in the implementation of the Federal Government’s security agenda, strategic engagements with security agencies and initiatives focused on the welfare of Nigerian troops and the development of military infrastructure.

His extensive grassroots political network and experience in both state-level administration and national security affairs are expected to be brought to bear on the campaign council’s security and intelligence responsibilities.

Reacting to the appointment, Matawalle expressed appreciation to President Tinubu and the leadership of the APC for the confidence reposed in him.

He pledged to deploy his experience as a former governor, serving Minister of the Federal Republic and political leader toward ensuring a peaceful, well-coordinated and successful campaign.

Matawalle also said he would work to support efforts aimed at taking the achievements of the Renewed Hope Administration to Nigerians across the country.

The appointment has continued to attract congratulatory messages from political associates, supporters and stakeholders, who described the new responsibility as a significant national assignment for the Minister.

The APC Presidential Campaign Council is expected to commence preparations for nationwide engagements as the party positions itself for the 2027 presidential election.
