A consultant cardiac surgeon, Prof. Martin Aghaji, has been released on bail by the Department of State Services (DSS) after his arrest over an alleged economic crime.

According to a statement issued by the Chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr. Babajide Kehinde Saheed, Prof. Aghaji was arrested by DSS operatives at his residence in Enugu on Thursday, July 2, 2026, and subsequently flown to the DSS Lagos State Command for investigation.

The statement disclosed that the Director of the Lagos State DSS Command informed the NMA Lagos State branch of the arrest and invited its leadership to the command, citing the cordial relationship between the agency and the association.

A delegation representing the National Officers’ Committee (NOC) of the NMA, led by its National Publicity Secretary, Prof. Olayinka Atilola, alongside the Lagos State Chairman, Dr. Babajide Saheed, the Lagos State Publicity Secretary, Dr. Bisoye Akinsulire, and the representative of the Enugu State branch, Dr. Placid Ajachukwu, visited the DSS office in Lagos on Sunday, July 5.

The NMA said Prof. Aghaji was granted bail on liberal terms and released into the custody of the association’s delegation after the bail conditions were fulfilled.

The association noted that the details of the alleged economic crime and other aspects of the investigation remain classified to safeguard ongoing investigations.

Neither the DSS nor the NMA disclosed the specific nature of the allegations against the medical expert. The investigation is expected to continue.
