The Honourable Minister of Defence, H.E. Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, CON, mni, is currently in Berlin, Germany, where he is representing Nigeria at the United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial 2025. The two-day global summit, which runs from May 13 to 14, is themed “Future of Peacekeeping” and brings together defence and foreign affairs leaders from around the world to strategize on the evolving nature of peacekeeping and ways to enhance international security cooperation.
In a statement signed by Patience Ituke for the Director of Information & Public Relations stated that: High-profile participants at the summit include UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, and Germany’s Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Joham Wadephul. Their presence reflects the growing urgency for global partnerships in confronting modern security challenges.
Minister Badaru was warmly received upon arrival by top German officials including Gunther Krichbaum, State Minister for Europe, and Dr. Nils Schmid, Parliamentary State Minister of Defence. The reception paved the way for in-depth dialogue on Nigeria-Germany relations and collaborative peacekeeping efforts.
On the sidelines of the summit, the Defence Minister held bilateral meetings with key international figures. In his meeting with Mr. Niels Annen, the German State Secretary for Economic Cooperation and Development, both parties explored Nigeria’s economic prospects and potential cooperation in the military-industrial sector.
Additionally, Minister Badaru met with Dr. Morissanda Kouyaté, Guinea’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. Their discussions focused on enhancing regional stability, tackling security concerns, and emphasizing the need for value addition to natural resources to drive national development.
Nigeria’s active participation in the ministerial underscores its continued commitment to global peace and security as well as regional development initiatives.
