Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, CON, mni, has called for deeper collaboration and greater investment in advanced aerospace technologies among African nations as a strategic response to the continent’s mounting security challenges.

Speaking at the opening of the 4th African Air Forces Forum held in Lagos, the Minister addressed a distinguished audience comprising Chiefs of Air Staff and aerospace leaders from over 30 countries. He emphasized the importance of unity, innovation, and strategic cooperation in confronting the multidimensional threats facing the continent, including terrorism, transnational crime, and maritime insecurity.

“We are confronted by multidimensional threats that transcend borders and defy traditional responses,” Abubakar stated. “Robust, collective action anchored in advanced airpower and strategic partnerships is urgently required.”

Held under the theme “Strengthening Collaboration in Advanced Aerospace Technologies for Enhanced National and Regional Security,” the Forum spotlighted the growing role of air power in modern warfare and regional stability. The Minister highlighted Nigeria’s ongoing commitment to modernizing its air force in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

According to him, Nigeria is heavily investing in Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR), air mobility, and precision strike capabilities, positioning the Nigerian Air Force as a crucial pillar in the region’s defence network.

“A technologically advanced Nigerian Air Force is not only vital to Nigeria’s security but a strategic asset to Africa’s collective defence,” he said.

While stressing the need for cutting-edge tools such as unmanned aerial systems and cyber defence integration, the Minister cautioned that true success lies in the human element of defence cooperation.

“This Forum is not only about technological advancement. It is about the human dimension of trust, mutual respect, and a shared ambition for a secure, united and prosperous Africa,” he added.

He also lauded President Tinubu for his steadfast support for the Nigerian military and his leadership in fostering regional peace and security.

In conclusion, the Minister commended the Chief of Air Staff and the Nigerian Air Force for their role in organizing the high-level gathering, describing the Forum as a powerful example of “what can be achieved when purpose meets partnership.”

The 4th African Air Forces Forum is expected to yield actionable strategies to bolster inter-African cooperation and establish air power as a cornerstone of peace, stability, and development across the continent.
