By Abdulrahman Aliagan,
There are men who pass through life, and there are men who define it. Professor Isiaka Zubair Aliagan belongs unmistakably to the latter, an intellectual colossus, a master communicator, and a builder of minds whose legacy is firmly etched into the foundations of Nigerian academia, journalism, and global scholarship.
At 60, this distinguished scholar, veteran journalist, literary icon, and Dean of the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at Kwara State University stands not merely as a celebrant of years, but as a towering symbol of excellence, discipline, and purposeful service to humanity. His life reflects a rare fusion of scholarship, creativity, and public engagement, qualities that define true greatness.
A scholar of uncommon depth and interdisciplinary strength, Professor Aliagan’s academic journey is both inspiring and formidable. From his early academic formation at Bayero University Kano to advanced studies at University of Lagos, and onward to earning dual doctoral degrees one in the History of Press and Politics from the University of Ilorin and another in Mass Communication from Universiti Sains Malaysia his intellectual trajectory reflects not just brilliance, but a lifelong commitment to knowledge production and global relevance.
His research, spanning journalism, political economy of the media, digital communication, and press–state relations, positions him as a key voice in understanding media’s role in democratic development and nation-building.
Yet, beyond degrees and distinctions lies the true essence of the man: a mentor par excellence. Professor Aliagan is a beacon of hope to countless individuals, young and old, whose lives have been transformed by his wisdom, guidance, and generosity of spirit.
He has mentored generations of journalists, academics, and professionals who today occupy strategic positions across Nigeria and beyond. His life stands as enduring proof that true success is measured not by personal achievements alone, but by the number of lives uplifted along the way.
In the annals of Nigerian higher education, his contributions remain indelible. Professor Aliagan has been instrumental in the establishment, nurturing, and advancement of Mass Communication and media-related programmes across several institutions, including the University of Ilorin, Kwara State University, Federal Polytechnic Offa, Al-Hikmah University, University of Abuja, and the College of Arabic and Islamic Legal Studies Ilorin, among others. These institutions remain living testaments to his vision—centres where knowledge continues to flourish under structures he helped to build.
As a journalist, his professional journey is equally remarkable. Beginning at The Guardian Newspapers, one of Nigeria’s most respected media institutions, he rose to the position of Aviation Editor, demonstrating exceptional mastery of the craft. He went further to establish a Quarterly Magazine titled Aviation Quarterly, His appointment as Editor of The Herald Newspaper further affirmed his editorial brilliance and leadership. Transitioning seamlessly into academia, he served as Head of the Directorate of Information at the University of Ilorin, where he bridged theory and practice with rare effectiveness.
His service to the nation extended into the highest levels of governance. As Senior Special Adviser on Media to the late Dora Akunyili during her tenure as Minister of Information, and later as Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, seconded to the Office of the First Lady, Patience Jonathan, Professor Aliagan played a strategic role in shaping national communication and public engagement at defining moments in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
In the realm of literature, Professor Aliagan’s voice resonates with creativity, cultural depth, and intellectual vigor. A prolific author with over 20 published works spanning drama, poetry, and prose, his contributions to literary discourse are both profound and enduring. Works such as Oba Momo, a powerful historical drama on the Ilorin Emirate; Cadence; The Scarce of the Moon; Olubu; Akeju (The Pampered Boy); and Nigeria in Retrospect are not merely artistic expressions, they are intellectual interventions that preserve history, interrogate society, and inspire critical reflection.
His literary excellence has earned him recognition within the Nigerian literary community, including honours from the Association of Nigerian Authors, where he was conferred a prestigious fellowship in acknowledgment of his immense contributions to literature and humanity.
But beyond accolades, positions, and publications lies the most profound dimension of his legacy, his humanity. Professor Aliagan is not only a scholar of international repute but also a brother, a father figure, a counselor, and a moral compass.
His humility, despite towering accomplishments, distinguishes him as a rare breed in an age where noise often competes with substance. He embodies the virtues of integrity, compassion, and service, values that continue to inspire all who encounter him.
As he marks this remarkable milestone of 60 years, we celebrate not just the passage of time, but the weight of impact.
