Abdulrasaq Abubakar Toyin University (AATU), Oke-Oba, Kwara State, has recorded a major breakthrough following the approval by the National Universities Commission (NUC) for the commencement of fifteen new undergraduate academic programmes beginning from the 2026/2027 academic session.
The approval, conveyed in a letter dated June 17, 2026, and signed by Abubakar M. Girei, Director of Academic Planning, for the Executive Secretary of the NUC, followed a comprehensive resource assessment exercise conducted by a panel of experts to evaluate the institution’s human and material capacity.
With the development, AATU has further strengthened its position among Nigeria’s emerging universities committed to expanding access to quality and market-driven higher education.
The newly approved programmes include B.Sc. Artificial Intelligence, B.CHS. Community Health, B.Sc. Intelligence and Security Studies, B.Sc. Chemistry, B.Sc. Medical Physics, B.N.Sc. Nursing Science, B.Sc. Public Health, B.MLS. Medical Laboratory Science, B.Sc. Political Science, B.Sc. Public Administration, B.Sc. Mass Communication, B.Sc. Microbiology, B.Sc. Industrial Chemistry, LL.B. Common Law, and LL.B. Common and Islamic Law.
According to the Commission, the approval covers only the full-time mode of delivery and applies to programmes to be run at the university’s Main Campus.
The NUC noted that any future plans to commence part-time delivery or postgraduate components of the approved programmes would require further regulatory approval.
The Commission also directed that the university must maintain only the approved titles and nomenclature for the programmes and continue to provide adequate human and material resources to sustain quality delivery.
Education stakeholders have described the approval as a strategic milestone that reflects AATU’s growing institutional capacity and commitment to academic excellence.
Particularly notable among the newly approved programmes are future-facing disciplines such as Artificial Intelligence, Medical Physics, Intelligence and Security Studies, Nursing Science and Medical Laboratory Science, areas considered critical to Nigeria’s development needs and global workforce competitiveness.
The approval is expected to broaden educational opportunities for students within Kwara State and beyond while strengthening the university’s contribution to research, innovation and professional training.
For AATU, the latest endorsement by the nation’s regulatory authority represents not only an expansion of programmes but another significant chapter in its journey towards becoming a leading centre of higher learning in Nigeria.
