Senator representing Imo West, Rochas Okorocha, has promised to build a tuition-free Islamic university in Daura, BBC Hausa reported on Tuesday.
The senator, a former Imo state governor, said his building would be funded by the Rochas Okorocha Foundation.
Rochas, who was recently awarded the title of ‘Maga Alherin Kasar Hausa’ in Daura, said students of the school will not have to pay any fees as tuition or accommodation.
He added that this was a reward for the hospitality shown to him in Daura, Katsina. Laura is the hometown of Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari.
“Because the Emir of Daura made me a traditional titleholder, I am going to give a gift, perhaps, that would never be forgotten. I will build an Islamic university with modern facilities under Rochas Okorocha Foundation and to be commissioned by myself in Daura town,” he said.
Okorocha at an event in 2020 said over 22,000 Nigerian youths have benefited from his foundation.
The foundation, started about 25 years ago, has empowered the poor and the needy, mostly in rural areas.
Rochas Foundation has several subsidiary foundations which include Rochas Foundation College of Africa.
The Foundation focuses on empowering less privileged children on the streets of Africa through access to quality education through provision of free education scholarships.
It has 21 tuition-free schools across 12 states in Nigeria.
