… Says Bankers Must Declare Their Assets

EFCC Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa and Kogi Deputy Governor, Chief David Onoja led other dignitaries who spoke at the 2-day NGIJ Workshop on Investigative Solution Journalism in Lagos over the weekend, TimeNigeria reports.
At the event, Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa cautioned journalists against media trial to avoid jeopardizing anti-corruption efforts of the agency.
The EFCC Boss represented by Deputy Head of Lagos Zonal Office …explained that the call for declaration of assets by bankers is age long law which the agency will implement to strengthen anti graft war in the country.
According to him, the law is not a new law and EFCC will ensure every banker comply before the deadline. This will help us monitor insider related funds, property trends and prevent money laundering.
He however called for revival of Investigative practices among journalists with a view of unraveling hard nut corruption cases and collaboration to ongoing anti-graft efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari led administration.
Bawa therefore expressed the agency’s readiness to partner with with NGIJ in area of sensitization and reportage of ongoing trial, noting that Investigative Journalists have a great role to play in the war against corruption in the county.
Kogi State Deputy Governor, Chief Edward Onoja, charged the NGIJ Members to live up to the billings as the country is currently facing the challenges of terrorists, armed bandit and kidnappers, saying that activities of investigative Journalists can uncover the Vail of men of the darkness.
Onoja, making reference the Governance Assessment Report carried out by the Guild in Kogi State, he noted that such assessment can actually present government to the people for them to make their decision. He noted that in a modern democracy, the role of investigative Journalists cannot be over-emphasised.
On Friday, the award winning Investigative Journalists, Fisayo Soyombo shared his experience with NGIJ members drawn from Lagos, Abuja, Kwara, Ogun and Oyo states. Fisayo Soyombo revealed that his passion for social change, justice and equity in the society spur him to embrace Investigative journalism.
Foremost Mass Communication scholars, Emmanuel Osideko and Oba Adeoye of Journalism in Nigeria also trained the participants on wide range of topics including the Concept of Solutions Journalism, Media Techniques for multiplatforms, branding and Digital Media entrepreneurship.
Other facilitator at the event include HEDA Coordinator, Mr Olanrewaju Suraju, Financial Analyst/Communicator, Dapo Daramola and Barrister Ayo Odukale of Ayo Odukale Chambers who delved into Media laws, FOI ACT and other relevant laws guiding media practice in Nigeria.
In his remark, NGIJ President, Ayoyemi Mojoyinola said the workshop aimed at equipping members with related skills and knowledge towards achieving guild’s mission of promoting good governance, accountability and transparency in the county.
