The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been conferred with the Grand Commander of the Order of Niger (GCON), Nigeria’s second-highest national honour, during his official visit to the African nation. The honour was bestowed by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, marking a significant moment in strengthening India-Nigeria relations.

PM Modi’s visit to Nigeria is the first by an Indian prime minister in nearly two decades and underscores the deepening bilateral ties between the two countries. Arriving in Abuja on Saturday evening, the Indian leader was warmly received ahead of the high-level discussions aimed at fostering “mutual respect and a shared mission,” according to President Tinubu.

During a ceremonial welcome on Sunday morning, PM Modi was received at the State House with full military honours. The Indian National Anthem was played, followed by an inspection of the honour parade conducted by Nigeria’s elite Brigade of Guards. The Nigerian National Anthem was also performed to signify the unity of purpose between the two nations.

The GCON, traditionally reserved for distinguished individuals, reflects Nigeria’s appreciation of India’s growing partnership in key areas such as trade, investment, and technology. The bilateral agreements signed during the visit are expected to usher in a new era of cooperation, benefiting both nations.

This landmark visit highlights the shared commitment of India and Nigeria to advancing mutual economic and strategic goals, reaffirming their longstanding ties as members of the Global South.
