Refugee Week 2026: ARRA Demands Stronger Global Action As the international community commemorates Refugee Week 2026, the Asylum and Refugee Rights Advocacy Foundation (ARRA) has called for urgent reforms aimed at strengthening refugee protection systems, expanding humanitarian support, and addressing the root causes of forced displacement across the world.
The organization, also known as Asylum And Refugee Rights Advocates, warned that the growing number of refugees, asylum seekers, migrants, stateless persons and internally displaced persons represents one of the most significant humanitarian challenges facing the global community, requiring collective action by governments, international organizations, civil society groups, the media and citizens.
In a statement marking Refugee Week 2026, signed by its Founder and Executive Director, Dr. Okey Ezugwu, ARRA said this year’s theme, “Courage,” captures the daily reality of millions of people who have been forced to flee their homes but continue to rebuild their lives despite enormous hardships.
According to the organization, the theme serves as a tribute to the resilience and determination of displaced populations around the world.
“It celebrates the extraordinary courage of individuals and families who have been forced to flee persecution, armed conflict, terrorism, human rights violations, environmental disasters, and other circumstances beyond their control, yet continue to demonstrate resilience, hope, and determination in rebuilding their lives,” the statement said.
ARRA noted that the annual observance provides an opportunity for reflection on the responsibilities owed to some of the world’s most vulnerable populations.
“The Refugee Week provided an important opportunity not only to recognize the strength and contributions of displaced persons but also to reflect on our collective responsibility to create a world where human dignity, protection, inclusion, and justice are guaranteed for all,” the organization stated.
Rising Displacement Levels Raise Concern
The advocacy group expressed concern over the increasing scale of global displacement, noting that millions of people continue to face barriers to safety, protection and social inclusion.
“Today, forced displacement has reached unprecedented levels globally,” ARRA said.
It added that displaced populations continue to encounter significant obstacles in accessing essential services and opportunities.
“Across continents, millions of vulnerable persons continue to face immense challenges, including limited access to education, healthcare, employment, legal protection, shelter, and durable solutions.”
The organization further warned that women and children remain among the groups most exposed to abuse and exploitation.
“Women and children remain particularly vulnerable to exploitation, trafficking, abuse, and discrimination,” the statement added.
Courage Requires Action
While acknowledging the resilience of displaced persons, ARRA emphasized that the burden of courage should not rest solely on refugees and migrants.
“As the world continues to reflect on the theme of Courage, ARRA emphasizes that courage must not be demanded solely of refugees and displaced persons,” the organization declared.
The statement argued that governments and institutions must demonstrate equal determination in responding to displacement challenges.
“Governments, international institutions, civil society organizations, and individuals must also demonstrate the courage to act decisively in addressing the root causes of displacement and strengthening protection systems for those in need.”
ARRA said the global refugee crisis requires more than sympathy, insisting that practical action and policy reforms are necessary to protect vulnerable populations.
Nigeria Urged to Deepen Commitment
The organization identified Nigeria as a critical stakeholder in refugee protection efforts across Africa and called for stronger national measures to support displaced populations.
“Nigeria occupies a strategic position in Africa and has consistently played a significant role in refugee protection and migration management within the region,” the statement noted.
However, ARRA maintained that existing efforts must be strengthened to meet emerging challenges.
“While notable efforts have been made over the years, much more remains to be done to strengthen institutional safeguards and improve the welfare of displaced populations.”
The organization urged the Federal Government to improve implementation of refugee and migration laws, strengthen institutional capacity among agencies responsible for asylum and migration management, and expand access to healthcare, education and livelihood opportunities.
It also advocated improved access to legal documentation and identity management systems, stronger coordination among government agencies and the integration of refugee concerns into national development programmes.
ARRA further called for intensified efforts to address insecurity, conflict and environmental degradation, which continue to contribute significantly to displacement within and beyond Nigeria’s borders.
International Community Must Do More
The advocacy group stressed that refugee-hosting nations, particularly in developing regions, require greater support from the international community.
“The global displacement crisis requires collective responsibility and international solidarity,” the statement said.
According to ARRA, many developing countries continue to shoulder enormous humanitarian responsibilities despite facing serious economic and developmental constraints.
“Developing countries continue to shoulder a disproportionate burden of hosting refugees despite limited resources and competing development priorities.”
The organization therefore called for increased financial and technical assistance to refugee-hosting countries, expanded resettlement opportunities and greater investment in conflict prevention initiatives.
ARRA also urged the international community to strengthen cooperation in responding to climate-induced displacement and emerging migration trends.
Additionally, it called for increased funding for refugee education, entrepreneurship, skills development and economic inclusion programmes.
NGOs Recognized for Vital Contributions
ARRA acknowledged the role of non-governmental organizations in supporting displaced populations and promoting human rights protections.
“Non-governmental organizations continue to serve as critical partners in protecting the rights and welfare of refugees and migrants,” the statement said.
“Their advocacy, humanitarian interventions, and legal support services remain indispensable.”
The organization encouraged NGOs to expand legal assistance programmes, promote social cohesion and support refugee-led initiatives that enable displaced persons to participate actively in decision-making processes.
ARRA also called for stronger partnerships between civil society groups, governments, international agencies and private-sector stakeholders.
Citizens Called to Promote Inclusion
Beyond institutions, ARRA emphasized the importance of individual action in building welcoming and inclusive communities.
“The protection of refugees and migrants is not solely the responsibility of governments and institutions. Every individual has a role to play in building inclusive and compassionate societies,” the statement noted.
The organization urged citizens to reject xenophobia, discrimination and misinformation while promoting understanding and respect for human dignity.
It also encouraged support for community-based initiatives and greater interaction between displaced persons and host communities.
Media Has a Critical Responsibility
ARRA devoted a significant portion of its Refugee Week message to the role of the media in shaping public attitudes toward migration and displacement.
According to the organization, responsible journalism remains essential in combating misinformation and promoting public understanding.
“The media remains one of the most powerful institutions in shaping public understanding of refugee, asylum, and migration issues,” the statement said.
“Through responsible journalism, the media can further help foster empathy, counter misinformation, promote evidence-based discourse, and amplify the voices of those who have been displaced.”
ARRA expressed concern that sensational reporting and stereotypes often undermine efforts to promote inclusion and social cohesion.
“At a time when refugees and migrants are increasingly subjected to stereotypes, sensationalism, and misinformation, the role of the media in promoting balanced and accurate reporting has never been more critical.”
The organization called on journalists and media organizations to promote fact-based reporting, amplify the experiences of refugees and asylum seekers, challenge hate speech and educate the public on the realities of displacement and migration.
It further urged the media to highlight positive stories of resilience, entrepreneurship and community contributions by refugees and migrants.
“ARRA believes that the media must demonstrate the same courage celebrated by this year’s theme by speaking truthfully, reporting responsibly, and using its influence to build more informed, compassionate, and inclusive societies.”
Strengthening Institutions for Long-Term Solutions
The organization argued that sustainable responses to displacement require stronger institutions and more effective protection systems.
Among its recommendations were more efficient asylum procedures, enhanced legal protections for refugees and migrants, improved registration and documentation systems, increased access to justice, and stronger regional cooperation among African countries.
ARRA also advocated human-rights-based migration governance frameworks that strike a balance between national security concerns and humanitarian obligations.
Commitment to Refugee Rights
Concluding its statement, ARRA reiterated that expressions of solidarity must be accompanied by practical action.
“As we commemorate Refugee Week 2026, ARRA reiterates that courage must translate into meaningful action.”
The organization said the determination demonstrated by displaced populations should inspire policymakers, institutions and communities to strengthen protection efforts worldwide.
“The courage demonstrated by refugees and displaced persons in overcoming adversity should inspire governments, institutions, organizations, and individuals to act with greater determination and compassion.”
ARRA further warned against indifference to the plight of vulnerable populations.
“A just and humane world cannot be built on indifference. It must be built on solidarity, shared responsibility, respect for human rights, and a collective commitment to protecting the vulnerable.”
Reaffirming its commitment to refugee and migrant rights, the organization pledged to continue advocating for the protection, dignity and inclusion of displaced persons in Nigeria, Africa and beyond.
“Together, we can create a future where every person forced to flee finds safety, protection, opportunity, and hope,” the statement concluded.
